Hospitals, Health Centers and Schools

In all three countries an evaluation of major hospitals with structural strengthening recommendations will contribute to improvement of the response capacity when future disasters (not only earthquakes) occur. A risk study of hospitals will be recommended in each country, which will also allow for positive synergy effects. This will be carried out in conjunction with national Health Authorities.

The task will include:

  • Individual technical walk-down
  • Identification of structural weaknesses.
  • Simplified vulnerability curve development based on pushover analysis of a finite element model of the structure.
  • Risk evaluation
  • Assessment of the vulnerability of services (non-structural elements that are vital to the hospital function.
  • Mitigation recommendations
Schools are structures in which children work during long days, but even in earthquake prone countries these structures are rarely of higher quality than other structures. As late as in the 2003 Bam disaster around 300 girls were killed when the boarding school collapsed. Similar tragedies were observed in Bingol (Turkey) and San Guiliano (Italy). The project will focus on 2-3 of the main schools and evaluate the structural risks of these buildings.
