Geohazards

A short overview of activities at NORSAR

The term geohazards cover a wide range of environmental loads that our societies are exposed to. NORSAR is engaged in research in primarily two areas:

  1. Earthquake hazard and risk (including topics related to tsunamis generation)
  2. Real-time slide monitoring.

Additionally NORSAR is engaged in anthropogenic risks such as mining induced cracking and cracking related to activities within hydrocarbon reservoirs. NORSAR provides research that covers various activities including software development, soil amplification investigations, strong motion attenuation, site specific seismic monitoring and earthquake risk reduction.

The International Centre of Geohazards (ICG) is a virtual research centre in which also NORSAR is pooling its knowhow.

The principles of HAZUS and SELENA are based on the crossover of the
damped ground motion displacement spectrum (left) and the physical
strength/capacity curve of the structure (right).
