The Centres of Excellence are an initiative to provide funding to internationally leading research groups in Norway.
The Research Council of Norway announced on 12th June 2002 that the application to establish the International Centre for Geohazards was one of the 13 initial winners. ICG started in 2003 and gets funding from the Research Council of Norway for the first 10 years, i.e., until 2012.
This multi-diciplinary research centre, which is located in Oslo, represents a milestone for the Norwegian geohazard comminuty. The centre consists of 5 partners, i.e., the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI, leading and host institution), the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), NORSAR, the University of Oslo, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.

 | ICG carries out research on the assessment, prevention and mitigation of geohazards, including risk of landslide in soil and rock due to rainfall, flooding, earthquakes and human intervention, and the geological risks in deep waters, especially underwater slides. ICG also contributes to the education of researchers and specialists in these fields.
NORSAR participates with expertise in seismology, micro-seismic monitoring, seismic risk, seismic modelling and seismic imaging. NORSAR coordinates also the geophysical activities at ICG.
