Software development

NORSAR is at the forefront internationally regarding development of commercial software products & services in the field of seismic oil and gas prospecting.

The commercial software products NORSAR-2D/3D, VelRock,  and SeisRoX are developed and maintained by NORSAR's Seismic Modelling section and are used by the leading E&P companies throughout the world.

NORSAR's software development strategy is to make state-of-the-art technology from the petroleum technology research activities available through commercial software products. Furthermore, all research activities in the field of petroleum technology should strengthen or extend NORSAR's software product portfolio.

Our products are developed in interdisciplinary teams with deep insight in geophysics and computer science. The software engineers work in a tight cooperation with research geophysics to realize the latest research into new prototypes. The prototypes evolves into final products by testing and verification in real cases by our service department, before released commercially by NORSAR Innovation AS. This process ensures that the new technology is usable and proven in real life by experienced users before it is released as part of our commercial software products.

The software engineers require a software process which is capable of handling rapid changing requirements emerging from research activities and service projects. We are using agile software development methods and modern software development tools to be able to incorporate changes quickly and focus strongly on how to make the latest research technology user friendly and available for the non-expert.
