Applied seismology
...seismology for society

The seismology section at NORSAR comprises two distinct activity areas, one related to earthquakes and the other related to verification of the treaty against nuclear testing.

The activities related to earthquakes comprise consulting and research within:

  • Earthquake hazard, vulnerability and risk analyses including seismotectonics
  • Seismic modeling techniques (both on- and off-shore)
  • Microseismic monitoring in mining and reservoir applications
  • The use of seismic monitoring in new areas such as tunnel safety and on railroads are also explored

Projects performed by NORSAR during the past few years include earthquake surveys and hazard studies in Norway and abroad for nuclear and hydroelectric power plants, large tunnels, and off-shore installations such as oil platforms and pipelines.

The NORSAR seismology staff maintains a close cooperation with internationally acknowledged institutions, and research results are regularly published in project reports and in international professional journals.
