A total of 50 primary and 120 auxiliary seismic stations are scheduled to comprise the seismic component of the International Monitoring System (IMS) once the network is completed. As of April 2008, 41 primary and 80 auxiliary stations have been installed (see figure below). As can be seen from the figure, almost all of the primary stations as well as several auxiliary stations are seismic arrays. This means that the development of more effective array processing techniques is the key to improved performance of the processing at the International Data Centre in Vienna, Austria.
NORSAR plans to continue the emphasis on array processing methods, both for the purpose of improving the regional seismic monitoring of Norway and adjacent regions, and so as to contribute to improved IDC processing on a global basis.

Seismic stations in the IMS network as of April 2008. Primary stations are marked as red symbols, auxiliary stations as green. Arrays are marked as circles and the (less capable) three-component stations are marked as triangles.
