Potential of seismic monitoring for railway purposes

NORSAR has been exploring the possibility of developing an automated warning system for railroad crossings based on seismic monitoring. The testing system consists of sensors directly attached to the rails at equal distances which are recording signals coming from the travelling trains and also signals developed by hitting the rails with a hammer.

Instrumentation scheme

Data processing involves spectral analysis, amplitude level analysis and cross-correlation analysis of the data recorded at the various rail positions.

The applications of seismic systems to railway related problems have two immediate potential applications:

  1. The application in an automated early warning for incoming trains.
  2. The in-situ determination of stresses in the rails as function of temperature changes.
