Svein Mykkeltveit, program coordinator for verification activities at NORSAR, has co-authored a book published by Springer entitled Detect and Deter: Can Countries Verify the Nuclear Test Ban? The other authors are Ola Dahlman (Sweden), Jenifer Mackby (USA) and Hein Haak (the Netherlands). The book has been presented at launching events in Vienna, Washington D.C. and the UN in New York.
How can countries verify compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and detect and deter violations? How can the rapid development in recent years in science and technology provide countries improved or even new tools? And how can states, by adopting new concepts and procedures, efficiently monitor areas of interest or concern to them, individually or together with other countries? These are the main questions raised in this new book, and answers are provided in terms of a review of current technical developments in the relevant verification disciplines. |
