Research

NORSAR was established in 1968 as a project for seismic array construction and research in seismology for the detection and verification of underground nuclear explosions. NORSAR has evolved into an internationally recognized research institute covering a wide range of topics in seismology and seismic exploration.

NORSAR's research activities are focused on three main areas:
  • Development of methods and processing systems for seismic monitoring and verification of compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
  • Basic seismological research associated with the recording of small and large earthquakes as well assessing earthquake hazard.
  • Development of methods and software within petroleum related seismic modelling technology.
