The team delivers projects funded by clients such as the Research Council of Norway, the EU H2020, the Norwegian Climit Fund, U.S. DOE and industry clients. Embedded in these project activities is the scientific development of software solutions and possible commercialization.

The microseismic team is developing methods and work processes to be used in different applications and industrial segments. A large part of the project portfolio is connected to projects concerning the safe storage of CO2; the design of networks, development of methods, and the monitoring of fluid injection.

Other major activities are linked to the monitoring of unstable rock slopes and activities related to the offshore oil & gas industry, such as the monitoring of injection wells, production, and depletion effects. Parts of the project portfolio comprises developing methods for enhanced geothermal energy production.

The work involves cooperation with active customers and external research institutions in Norway and abroad. A primary objective is developing new numerical models and data interpretation workflows that can identify governing mechanisms and responses to microseismic activity in the subsurface. Skills needed include the capacity to investigate the use of seismological methods to characterize, and potentially differentiate, the internal structure of natural and induced fracture networks. The candidate will need to be able to relocate microseismicity, determine source parameters and mechanisms, and thereupon, derive fracture network geometries.

Required skills and experiences

  • general seismic waveform processing
  • knowledge of earthquake location methodology
  • knowledge of programming (e.g. matlab, C/C++, python, or others)
  • experience of managing projects and teams
  • proven working-knowledge in numerical modelling is advantageous

The right candidate will be a good communicator with great presentation skills, with the ability to both collaborate in a team and independently solve assignments. The candidate needs to be fluent in English, written and spoken, and good Norwegian language skills are an advantage.
