Use of nuclear weapons in the Middle East: – Unlikely, but not impossible, says Kjølv Egeland of NORSAR to VG. He believes the risk is extremely low, but warns that the conflict could become more unpredictable.
– I believe the use of nuclear weapons is unlikely, but not impossible, says political scientist and senior researcher at NORSAR, Kjølv Egeland, to VG.
When asked why it is unlikely, he particularly points to the political costs.
– The use of nuclear weapons would result in a massive PR loss. In modern wars, it is not just about what happens militarily on the battlefield, but also about who holds the moral high ground.
Nuclear weapons are distinct in that they are nuclear weapons: The energy from a nuclear reaction produces an explosion far more powerful than conventional bombs. They exist both as smaller tactical weapons aimed at specific targets and as strategic weapons capable of obliterating entire cities.
