Kjølv Egeland on Trump's statements about nuclear testing
NORSAR's Kjølv Egeland comments on President Trump's statement about possible nuclear testing.
NORSAR's Kjølv Egeland was interviewed by several Norwegian media outlets in connection with the US President's much-discussed statement on nuclear testing on 30 October.
On the social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: ‘Because of other countries' testing programmes, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately.’
Egeland pointed out that it was unclear whether the president was referring to missile testing or actual nuclear test explosions. During Trump's previous term as president, the US accused Russia of conducting small test explosions or other activities in violation of the Test Ban Treaty on Novaya Zemlya in the Arctic.
NORSAR is closely monitoring the old Russian test site and has not recorded any suspicious incidents. Russia's last known test explosion took place on Novaya Zemlya in 1990.
