NORSAR is an internationally recognized and independent research foundation. We are specialists in seismology and seismic monitoring. NORSAR has 50 years of experience in seismic monitoring. In 1999, NORSAR was appointed Norway’s National Data Center for the CTBT by the Norwegian parliament. We advise Norwegian authorities on treaty-related matters and maintain the operations of the international monitoring stations on Norwegian territory. NORSAR has extensive experience in research and development projects conducted in collaboration with national and international defense organizations, public agencies, and other strategic partners. 

Building on this expertise, NORSAR is expanding its activities within security, defense, and societal resilience. Coordinate these efforts, NORSAR is establishing a new department. The department will focus on delivering research, technology, and advisory services that support national security, defense capabilities, and preparedness. Some of this work will be classified information and data and we have applied to be subject to the Security Act. The new department will be led by Arve E. Mjelva, deputy CEO and former Head of Solutions.

Tina Kaschwich has been appointed Head of Solutions. Reflecting its evolving focus and expertise, the department will be renamed Geoscience Technologies.

The department will continue to develop solutions and technologies in software development, fiber optics, hazard and risk management, and infrasound. By combining scientific excellence with technology development, the department plays a key role in translating research into operational solutions that create value for customers and society.

Geoscience Technologies will focus on strengthening collaboration across disciplines, fostering innovation, and ensuring that research and technology development remain closely connected.

I am very excited to take on the role as Head of Department. Having served on NORSAR's Board for several years and as Deputy Head of Department, I know the organisation well and have a deep appreciation for both its scientific excellence and its societal impact.

The biggest challenge is not science itself but creating a common direction across a department with very different professional backgrounds. Researchers and software developers often work in different ways and are driven by different goals, but NORSAR's strength lies precisely in bringing these competencies together. My ambition is to build on that strength and create an environment where people can learn from each other, collaborate effectively and develop together.

NORSAR is in a period where advanced research, technology development and operational solutions are becoming increasingly interconnected. I see great opportunities in strengthening these links and ensuring that scientific excellence is translated into solutions that create value for our partners and society.

I am also proud to become part of NORSAR's leadership team at a time when diversity and inclusion are receiving greater attention. As the first female scientist in the executive leadership group, I hope to contribute both as a leader and as a role model, while keeping the focus on competence, collaboration and delivering high-quality results.
