Tanja from Australia to NORSAR to study
Tanja Pejic has been visiting NORSAR for just over a week to exchange knowledge and learn. “We share many of the same opportunities and challenges,” says Tanja Pejic.
Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming a visitor from Australia. Zagreb-born seismologist Tanja Pejic moved to Australia to study and has lived in Canberra ever since. She completed a PhD in seismology at the Australian National University (ANU). and now Geoscience Australia in Canberra, where she works on earthquake monitoring, seismic analysis, and global seismic detection systems. Exchanging knowledge and learn advanced methods for monitoring earthquakes and induced seismicity, especially in offshore environments are relevant to Norway and Australia. Last week she also visitet Stendammen together with Bettina and Morten.
"The goal of my project here was to learn about potential monitoring methods and determine how they can be applied in Australia, if possible".
Here har Tanjas own words about her visit:
"I arrived here after being awarded Geoscience Australia's Development Grant in December 2023. I visited NORSAR to collaborate with Bettina and Volker and learn about monitoring and analysis of earthquakes induced through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) processes. CCS involves capturing, transporting and storing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel power stations, energy intensive industries, and gas fields by injecting the captured greenhouse gases back into the ground. New cracks may open, or existing faults may be (re)activated as a consequence, thus causing induced seismicity. Offshore CCS facilities already exist in Australia and elsewhere in the world (including Norway) and new ones are scheduled to open in Australia within the next few years. Norway and Australia face similar challenges in monitoring offshore seismicity using onshore sparse networks. The goal of my project here was to learn about potential monitoring methods and determine how they can be applied in Australia, if possible. I also got to talk to many wonderful people working at NORSAR, including Berit, Annie, and Tormod, all of whom gracefully shared their knowledge with me and gave me some advice on tackling specific seismic problems in Australia. Bettina and Volker have been amazing hosts during my stay. Morten took time out of his schedule to show us around NC06 site of the NORSAR array (thank you Morten!). I spoke to so many people, and everyone has been kind and accommodating. Thank you all for hosting me and making my stay a memorable one. I hope to see you again next time I come through Norway!"
Cheers,Tanja
