Forskerinteresser My research centres on advancing our understanding of earthquake and general seismic processes through the development and application of innovative observational, analytical, and modelling techniques. I work at the intersection of seismology, signal processing, and environmental geophysics, with a particular focus on high-resolution seismic monitoring of natural and anthropogenic sources across diverse settings. My work encompasses microseismicity and induced seismicity, improving event detection, location, and characterization, including studies of seismicity in offshore environments such as the North Sea and controlled energy-related activities like geothermal and CO₂ storage projects. A core theme in my research is the integration of novel sensing technologies, including distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) on fibre-optic networks, which enables real-time and large-scale surveillance of seismic and acoustic events. This has applications ranging from submarine seismic monitoring to urban and infrastructure environments. I lead interdisciplinary projects that leverage machine learning and advanced signal processing to extract meaningful information from complex datasets, such as automatic identification of seismic phases, urban seismic noise classification, and rapid hazard assessment. This work supports practical societal needs, including seismic hazard analysis, urban risk management, and the development of robust seismic monitoring frameworks for emerging energy technologies.

Forskerinteresser Ben Dando is Head of Department at NORSAR, responsible for seismology and verification activities as part of Norway’s National Data Centre for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Working on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he contributes to international treaty verification and seismic data analysis. His work focuses on developing and applying advanced methods for seismic monitoring, waveform analysis, and the detection of natural and anthropogenic seismicity. His research interests include seismic location methods, array and signal processing, forensic seismology, and the use of emerging technologies such as Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and machine learning for enhanced event detection and characterisation. Ben holds a PhD in earthquake seismology from the University of Leeds and a Master’s degree from University College London.

Forskerinteresser Jon Magnus Christensen is Head of Department for the National Data Centre activities at NORSAR. This includes responsibility for development and operation of NORSAR’s IMS seismic, infrasound, and radionuclide stations for nuclear explosion monitoring. He received his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Oslo, Norway, in 2015 and worked as an engineer at NORSAR during 2015-2017. Since 2017, Jon Magnus Christensen has been managing the Operations of the National Data Centre at NORSAR. Jon Magnus Christensen has experience as a delegate for Norway to Working Group B of the CTBTO since 2016. He has broad experience in operation, maintenance and quality control of NORSAR’s monitoring stations.

Forskerinteresser I am a seismologist and scientific adviser at NORSAR, where I have worked since 1984. Throughout my career, I have conducted research across a broad spectrum of seismological topics, with a particular focus on applications related to nuclear test-ban monitoring. My scientific interests and areas of expertise include array and seismic network processing, event detection and analysis, assessment of seismic network capability, and infrasound studies. Since 2014, I have served as a Norwegian delegate and Task Leader in the Working Group on Verification Issues at the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in Vienna, Austria. In addition, I chair the Norwegian National Committee for the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and serve on the steering committee of the Norwegian National Seismic Network (NNSN).

Forskerinteresser I am a seismologist specializing in the application of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) to seismic and acoustic monitoring. My research focuses on array processing, signal analysis, and the development of methods for improving the characterization of earthquakes, explosions, and related phenomena.

Forskerinteresser As a geophysicist and seismologist by training, my research interests include machine learning, environmental seismology with a focus on the cryosphere, array seismology, ambient seismic noise analysis, and signal processing.

Forskerinteresser I am Technology Lead for Fibre Sensing at NORSAR since 2020, and always keen to find new and novel applications for this fascinating technology. My fundmental in interest is in general signal processing and detection event events of any kind. I like to combine my extensive experience in seismology and fibre sensing into novel applications with high TRLs. Fibre sensing is a fascinating opportunity to make vibration sensing at high-resolution a commodity.

Forskerinteresser I am currently part of NORSAR’s nuclear test-ban verification team, contributing to the development of seismic analysis methods for global treaty monitoring. I completed my PhD at the University of Oslo in 2024, focusing on seismicity in the North Sea Basin, a region important for energy production and future CO₂ storage.

Forskerinteresser I research seismic sources anywhere on Earth and across all magnitudes and source types, focusing both on detecting signals and characterizing their underlying physical mechanisms. This includes developing smart, efficient, physics-based methods for forward and inverse modeling, signal analysis, high-performance computing, and real-time processing. I use moment tensors for source parameter estimation, classification, and uncertainty analysis. Forskerinteresser My research focuses on the relationships between stress, structure, and seismicity in both the cryosphere and the solid Earth. I am particularly interested in developing high-quality microseismic catalogues and applying them to study glaciers, ice streams, and volcanic systems. A core part of my work involves creating free and open-source software that advances these research goals and supports the wider scientific community. At NORSAR, I work to expand and strengthen seismic research in polar environments, where rapid climate-driven changes are altering ice dynamics and patterns of seismicity.

At NORSAR, I work on both research and consultancy projects, translating scientific modeling into practical solutions for seismic risk management, resilience planning, and risk-informed decision-making for urban areas and critical infrastructure.

Forskerinteresser Håvard Iversen earned his Master of Science degree in Image Processing and Pattern Recognition from the University of Oslo in 1990. He joined NORSAR in 1991 and has since been deeply involved in developing NORSAR’s seismic modeling software for 2D and 3D ray modeling, survey planning, Green’s functions for PSDM, reservoir analysis, and time-to-depth conversion. His work also includes significant contributions to NORSAR’s software solutions for geohazards (ground shaking, liquefaction, landslides, and tsunami), risk, and resilience modeling.

Forskerinteresser Ivan Van Bever is a Business Developer at NORSAR, where he works at the intersection of research, innovation, and business strategy. His role focuses on identifying and developing commercial applications of NORSAR’s research results. With a background in geoscience and extensive experience in project and product management, Ivan has coordinated several large-scale EU and Research Council of Norway projects on earthquake resilience and multi-hazard risk assessment. His professional interests include innovation management and the strategic development of advanced research into practical societal benefits.

Forskerinteresser Kjølv is a political scientist working on international security and multilateral diplomacy. Prior to joining NORSAR, Kjølv was a postdoctoral research fellow and lecturer at Sciences Po in Paris. He completed his PhD (DPhil) in International Relations at the University of Oxford in 2018. Kjølv’s professional interests centre on arms control, conceptions of risk, and the history of nuclear testing, and his research has appeared in a range of top-ranked academic journals, including Security Studies, International Affairs, Contemporary Security Policy, and International Studies Review. He has served as a member of the Norwegian delegation to the International Partnership for Nuclear Disarmament Verification (IPNDV) since 2023. He has engaged and worked with a number of international organizations, including the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty Organization.

Forskerinteresser I am a planetary seismologist - my main interest is the application of seismic methods to explore the Earth, the Moon, Mars and Venus. At NORSAR, I am working on the AIR (Airborne Inversion of Rayleigh waves) projects: we investigate how venusquakes could be recorded from the air, as infrsasound, by balloons and satellite imagers, and what these signals would tell us about the interiors of Venus.

Forskerinteresser I am a geophysicist and datascientist working at NORSAR in the Solutions department. I apply data-oriented solutions to exotic geophysical problems. My research interests in geophysics include near-surface seismology, natural and man-made geophysical event analysis using infrasound data, source and subsurface velocity inversions using seismic and infrasound records, and waveform modeling in coupled seismo-acoustic media.

Forskerinteresser I enjoy figuring out how things work and understanding certain dynamics and dependencies in system, such as Off-Grid installations, espacially the mechanical and electrical systems.

Forskerinteresser My research interests are quite broad and span several domains of array signal processing, acoustics, seismology, complex media, and wave propagation. Forskerinteresser I am a principal researcher at NORSAR with a background in wavefront propagation in anisotropic media, initially applied to survey design. Over the years, I have been involved in a wide range of projects spanning infrasound studies, software development for seismic event location, and hazard and risk assessment applications. Recently, my work has expanded into fibre-optic sensing technologies and the development of passive seismic monitoring systems. My research interests focus on advancing methods and technologies for improved subsurface monitoring.

Forskerinteresser I am an experienced observational seismologist and structural geologist. I am fascinated about figuring out the source of a shaking event from a distance and learning about the inner workings of the Earth. Previously, I worked on detecting and locating earthquakes, computing earthquake magnitudes, fault plane solutions and moment tensors, creating subsurface receiver function and tomography images, and implementing seismological methods into software packages. At NORSAR, I work on relative seismic methods, using strong and well recorded seismic events to characterize nearby smaller and nosier ones.
