Key tasks and responsibilities 

The PostDoc will be part of our contributions to the 'Centre for Geophysical Forecasting' (https://www.ntnu.edu/web/cgf/cgf-centre-for-geophysical-forecasting). This is a recently funded eight-year interdisciplinary research effort for innovation in geohazard monitoring and sustainable resource exploitation. Fibre optic sensing is a key method in this centre. NORSAR has a growing instrument pool consisting of 3 DAS and 1 DTSS systems, as well as an in-house fibre test facility (https://www.norsar.no/in-focus/nor-frost-a-near-surface-fibre-optic-sensing-test-site) aimed at fundamental and applied research towards the advancement of fibre sensing technology. 

The workplace is Kjeller, about 20 km East of Oslo. The position will include travel activities in Norway and abroad. 

Qualifications, experience and knowledge

You will be working with fibre data acquired from landslide and avalanche monitoring, as well as local, regional, and teleseismic earthquake data. You will have the opportunity to participate in the design, planning, and execution of fieldwork throughout Norway and potentially other (European) locations. 

Furthermore, competence in some of the following areas is required:

  • Strong signal processing skills for event detection and characterisation
  • Proven technical programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Python) 
  • Track record in publishing high-quality research is desirable

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including the ability to present complex or technical information effectively to a range of audiences
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work to deadlines whilst maintaining accuracy and an eye for detail
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and activities
  • Commitment to high-quality research
