Norwegian National Seismic Network
NORSAR is a partner in the Norwegian National Seismic Network (NNSN), which monitors earthquake activity in Norway and surrounding offshore areas.
Project details
Status: Ongoing
Project period: 2024 - 2028
Funding source: Offshore Norge
Project manager: University of Bergen (UiB)
Partner: NORSAR
The Norwegian National Seismic Network (NNSN) consists of over 50 seismic stations and arrays strategically located across mainland Norway and the Arctic islands (Svalbard, Jan Mayen, Bjørnøya, and Hopen). The network is led by UiB with NORSAR as a partner. The project was established in 1992 and is currently funded under a five-year contract with Offshore Norway
In connection with petroleum activities on the continental shelf, operators are required by Norwegian authorities to monitor seismic activity. This monitoring is carried out through NNSN, where continuous data collection and subsequent analyses provide a fast and accurate overview of earthquakes in Norway and nearby regions. Data from NNSN also contribute to a better understanding of the distribution and causes of earthquakes in Norway and are used to map the Earth's crust and subsurface structures.
NORSAR contributes with data processing and data from selected station.
