Seismic hazard
NORSAR has conducted research, development and consulting in seismic hazard and risk since 1975.
NORSAR earthquake hazard and risk specialists have extensive experience in providing world-leading research and development, and consultancy services in seismic hazard, earthquake geotechnical engineering, and earthquake risk and resilience studies. NORSAR specialists have carried out work all across the world and always in accordance with national and international standards and using advanced methodologies and high-tech software tools.
Research and Development
NORSAR is actively involved in innovative research and development projects. NORSAR has been part and leading a number of national and international innovative projects contributing to the recent advances in understanding, modelling and forecasting earthquake-induced hazards and how they impact communities, infrastructures and livelihoods.
Consultancy Services
NORSAR has delivered numerous high-value and high-risk projects assessing seismic hazard, geology ground surface for critical infrastructures, such as nuclear and hydroelectric power plants, dams, tunnels, waste facilities, offshore platforms, and petrochemical plants. The hazard analyses can be performed at regional level and for site-specific adjustments, using Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) and Deterministic Seismic Hazard Assessment (DSHA). The assessment can also include seismic ground response analysis.
Risk and resilience analysis can be performed for a given asset (building or infrastructure), a system or network of systems, and at different scales from local, regional, to cross-border. NORSAR provides comprehensive risk and resilience services including vulnerability assessment, physical impact or service downtime, and probable financial loss associated with various scenarios. NORSAR technical expertise can also develop comprehensive solutions and recommendations to reduce the identified vulnerabilities and increase the asset's security level. Also monitor critically important assets. Seismic monitoring makes it easier to understand the behavior of the structure. It provides a better basis for predicting what the asset will withstand in the event of a seismic event.
Software Solutions
NORSAR portfolio also include development of earthquake-induced hazards and risk modelling software solutions customized to various range of client’s preferences and priorities. We develop software for various methods to model earthquake-induced hazards (ground shaking, liquefaction, landslides, tsunami) and seismic risk (asset physical damage, financial and socio-economic impacts, including also insurance loss). NORSAR's software solutions are used by leading operators of critical infrastructures around the world and insurance industry.
