Furthering a strong collaboration with the US
Last week, a delegation from NORSAR was in the USA to participate in the annual knowledge exchange with AFTAC, a highly valuable and long-standing collaborator for us.
The partnership between NORSAR and AFTAC (US Air Force Technical Applications Center) dates back to the early 1970s and is centered around data exchange and our joint efforts to improve methods for detecting nuclear tests. AFTAC sports an impressive history with scientific advancements and is a valued partner to NORSAR.
Representatives from both institutions convene for annual follow-up meetings termed Joint Scientific Commissions Meeting. Following a successful visit to us last year, this year’s gathering was hosted at Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
The week was spent engaging in fruitful discussions on scientific advancements in the field of test ban monitoring and the implementation of new methods such as fiber technology and machine learning in the verification work. NORSAR shared results from our seismic array near Hornsund on Svalbard and our plans for two new arrays, one seismic and one infrasound, near Troll in Antarctica as part of the TONe-project. The yearly scientific exchange is both interesting and mutually beneficial.
We thank our hosts for a rewarding week and look forward to continuing our strong collaboration!
