In 2023, NORSAR was contracted by Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) to develop a software system for processing data from the Permanent Reservoir Monitoring (PRM) system for the Mero Field. The field is located in deep waters offshore Brazil approximately 180 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, in the pre-salt region of the Santos Basin. This deliverable is part of the contract between ASN, Maersk Supply Service (MSS), and Petrobras, the Operator of the Mero Field Consortium, to supply and install a PRM system on the field.

Microseismic monitoring and processing enhance the understanding of geomechanical properties within the reservoir, such as fracture networks, rock properties and stress distribution. This, in turn, helps to understand how fractures propagate and identify potential risks like unintended fractures that could lead to environmental hazards or compromise well integrity.

Building on over 50 years' experience in research and development, NORSAR will provide the necessary systems to continuously process the passive seismic data in real-time. The interpretation of PRM data will improve reservoir management by offering valuable real-time insights into geomechanical properties. By understanding reservoir behavior at a micro level, operators can optimize production strategies, enhance recovery, and increase safety in offshore operations.
